About Sarafina - Siyelele Mama Sechaba
"Siyelele Mama" which translates to "We are under attack, Mother" (also known as "Sechaba" or "Nation" in English) is a beautiful, emotionally gripping Sesotho and isiZulu song from the powerful and significant movie, Sarafina.
This song addresses the atrocities of the South African "Apartheid" regime. It is especially relevant to the year 1976 whereby school students adopted a campaign of resistance against having to be taught in Afrikaans in their schools. (Soweto uprising - 1976)
Sadly, approximately 700 were killed during this time including well-known Hector Pieterson. This story of Sarafina, a young girl caught up in the struggle for freedom in South Africa is still relevant to this day. May we never forget those gone before us, their souls will live on through the music.
